REX Book Store’s 7th Annual Educators’ Congress (AECON) was held last October 15 and 16 at the Hotel Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila, with the theme “Integrating 21st Century Literacies In The Curriculum”. This was the first ever AECON in which participants utilized the Internet and Schoology in their on-site learning. Department of Education (DepEd) Assistant Secretary Elvin Ivan Uy discussed DepEd’s take on 21st century literacies and patiently answered participants’ questions afterwards. Meanwhile, REX Digital’s Learning Systems Manager Honey de Peralta conducted a lively discussion of the Schoology learning management system.
The main feature of the 2-day Congress were the lesson-filled talks from REX Book Store’s longstanding partner, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), in the person of Presenter Mr. Michael “Mike” Fisher. Mr. Fisher is an instructional coach and educational consultant specializing in the fusion of instructional technology and curriculum design. He works with districts across America in helping teachers and schools maximize available technology, software, and web-based resources while attending to curriculum design, instructional practices, and assessments. Philippine curriculum expert Ms. Rita Atienza synthesized Mr. Fisher’s discussions and contextualized them in the Philippine setting.
Ms. Atienza is one of the consultants of Authentic Education that was founded by Understanding by Design (UbD) proponent Grant Wiggins. She has been conducting seminars/workshops on UBD, Differentiated Instruction, use of technology in instruction, and curriculum mapping since 2009. The participants were afterwards treated to a sumptuous dinner and serenaded by soulful songs rendered by The Voice Season 2 finalists Leah Patricio and Daryl Ong at the Palacio de Maynila.
