ASCD‘s Whole Child Approach is an effort to transition from a focus on narrowly defined academic achievements to one that promotes the long-term development and success of all children. The demands of the 21st century require a new approach to education to fully prepare students for college, career, and citizenship. Research, practice, and common sense confirm that a whole child approach to education will develop and prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of today and tomorrow by addressing students’ comprehensive needs through the shared responsibility of students, families, schools, and communities.

A Whole Person is pictured as someone that is Healthy, Safe, Engaged, Supported, and Challenged. As it is important to nurture whole children, it is also vital that we develop this practice in the workplace to develop whole workers to develop more fruitful and meaningful work.

CONTINUOUS LEARNING
IN THE WORKPLACE

As it is the goal of the Whole Child Initiative to focus on long-term development and success, it is essential that learning continues in the workplace. Enabling workers to continuously learn not just helps the organization to easily go to higher grounds with much capable employees, it also allows employees’ morale to be boosted as fulfilment will now be more meaningful than anything money can buy. In today’s busy world, technology enables easier access to information and learning through Learning Management Systems or LMS, these kinds of cloud based services enables employees to learn skills anytime and anywhere, using any device.

Schoology, a long time player in the LMS game has been in the forefront of learning and has continued to develop the LMS landscape to introduce features like assessment and gamification to make learning even more rewarding.

PROPER LEGAL PRACTICE
IN THE WORKPLACE

As with anything, observance of proper execution of laws is essential in developing an environment that nurtures the Whole Person. This of course, could only be achieved with proper understanding of the rule of law, especially the Labor Law, not just for legal departments but for each employee as well. This help in having a collaborative approach when it comes to the protection of the rights of every one in the workforce.

MEANINGFUL WORK IMMERSION EXPERIENCES

As the Department of Education further improves the learning experiences of students through the work immersion program for Senior High School Students undergoing the K-12 initiative, learners are now required to be exposed to the workplace as early as their late teens. With this, DepEd hopes to develop more meaningful exposures to students even before they pursue their own careers or continue studying in college. Enabling workplaces and processes to be designed in support of the SHS Work Immersion program would help not just the learners but the enterprise as well in terms of being familiar and adapted to the needs of the future workforce.
