SECURING THE SUCCESS OF THE 21st CENTURY WHOLE CHILD THROUGH SINGAPORE MATHEMATICS
The recently concluded the REX Book Store 2017 Singapore Math Conference was a success. Entitled “Securing the Success of Every Child through Singapore Math”, it was held last August 17 and 18 at the REAP Center. The conference was conducted in partnership with the REX DIGITAL Publishing Corp. as well as the Rex Institute for Student Excellence (Day 1) and SL Education (Day 2).
Day 1: “IDEATE & CREATE”
The first day of the conference focused on Design Thinking Strategy and was facilitated by Woohoo Learning Lab (www.woohoo.ph). Woohoo is a professional development company that helps teachers create meaningful learning experiences through thoughtful and research-based technology integration.
Through Woohoo’s CEO Galvin Ngo and board member Bituin Callanta, workshop participants learned to directly approach complex problems, collaboratively innovate, and create holistic, sustainable solutions.
About the Day 1 Facilitators
Ngo has an M.A. in Educational Administration from Ateneo De Manila University, and is currently a part-time instructor at the Education Department. He was the former coordinator of the NExT Team at Xavier School, where he led the One2One program initiative, IT support and the Computer Education Department. He is also an Apple Distinguished Educator and an Apple Professional Learning Consultant.
Meanwhile, Callanta combines her experiences in teaching, training, and instructional program design with digital content marketing, user experience design, and online analytics to help co-design learning experiences. She previously worked as a reading and math intervention specialist.
Day 2: “TEACHING OF GEOMETRY”
The second day of the conference was facilitated by Dr. Yeap Ban Har (www.facebook.com/banhar.yeap), a leading expert on Singapore Mathematics. Through the sessions, participants learned effective strategies to use in teaching the concepts of angles and shapes. The course included mathematics concepts for elementary as well as high school.
About the Day 2 Facilitator
Ban Har taught for over a decade at the National Institute of Education in Singapore. He is currently the Director of Curriculum and Professional Development at Pathlight School (an autism-oriented school in Singapore) and principal of Marshall Cavendish Institute (a global provider of professional development). He has written dozens of textbooks and scholarly articles for publishers throughout the U.S. and Singapore.
